I’m a new resident, how do I start recycling in Medford? |
If a recycling bin has not been left on the premises by the previous owner, you could pick up a bin at City Hall, Room 304. Bins are $8 for the first one and $6 for any additional bins. Recycling brochures are also available listing all recycables collected. Recycling is collected every other week and determined by either a green or blue bin. Call the DPW at 393-2419 for a brochure.
You can recycle the following in Medford: Glass, tin, aluminum, Plastic
(#’s 1-5 ), newspapers, magazines, junk mail, paper and cardboard. NO PIZZA BOXES!
All my recycling doesn’t fit in one bin, what can I do? |
The DPW suggests that you utilize the recycling drop-off center at the DPW yard on James Street, hours are 7 am – 4 pm M-F. Newspapers can be tied or put in paper bags and placed next to the recycling bin, this will save space in the bin. A plastic container (similar to our bin) marked “Recycling” can also be used.
How do I dispose of an appliance? |
Residents need to pay a $25 fee for removal of each appliance. You can obtain these stickers at the DPW office in City Hall, Room 304. Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Wednesday 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM and Friday 8:30 – 12:30 PM. Residents are also welcome to mail a check to the DPW and the sticker will mailed to them.
How do I dispose of a television? |
Televisions and computer monitors contain Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT’s) which contain lead. Disposal of these are banned from Massachusetts landfills as of April 1, 2000. residents must now purchase a CRT removal sticker for $25 at the DPW office in City Hall, Room 304. (see above)
Why didn’t my yard waste get collected? |
Yard waste i.e. grass clippings, leaves, small twigs, are picked up on designated weeks noted in the recycling brochure. Yard waste must be in either brown paper leaf bags or in open barrels. Call the DPW at 393-2419 for a brochure.
I have old paint, how do I dispose of it? |
The Department of Public Works has a surplus paint shed located at the City Yard on James Street. Residents are welcome to bring in latex or oil-base paint with a five gallon maximum. The paint shed is opened once a month until October.
Note: Cans with less that ½” of paint can be solidified by adding kitty litter or speedy-dri to it.
I have a variety of household hazardous waste products, how do I dispose of these? |
The Department of Public Works at this time does not have a facility for HHP. The closest site is located in Lexington on Hartwell Avenue. Residents are charged by the carload, $50+ for a full carload and $35+ for a half carload.
Where do our recycables go after they leave Medford? |
Medford’s recycling is taken to K.T.I. in Charlestown. The commingles are then sorted and shipped to their respective processing plant. Since the program has started in 1994, Medford has averaged over 2,500 tons of recycling a year.
